Surfer Rosa Beguine

The beguine Symforosa is visited one spring morning in her hofke by a gardener who comes to prune the grapevine. She falls in love with him, but doesn't dare to tell him. And when she is about to do so anyway, the gardener comes with surprising news.

In Surfer Rosa Beguine Adriaan Van Aken connects the language of Felix Timmermans with the soundscape of The Pixies. The title refers both to the heimatnovelle 'De zeer schone uren van Juffrouw Symforosa, begijntjen' (1918) and to the classic rock record Surfer Rosa (1988). In almost all of The Pixies' songs, quiet and loud, full and empty passages alternate. And that is also what Adriaan wants to do with this performance.
